The house originated (c. 1860) as a tin shop and was expanded and turned into a hotel called Harrington House (c.1870). The hotel operated for about ten years and became a private residence until its present reincarnation as a Bed & Breakfast.
Augustus House is named after Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and father of Queen Victoria. He was the first member of the royal family to live in Canada for a significant period and is credited for being the “Father of the Canadian Crown” for his role in the development of Canada. Augustus coined the term “Canadian” to describe both French and English settlers in Upper Canada.
Augustus House is a nod to history and tradition with an appreciation for the comforts of our modern world.
